Structural Metadata - Overview

Structural metadata is the foundational layer of SDMX, defining the meaning, ownership, organisation, relationships, and constraints of the data being exchanged; enabling systems to validate, interpret, transform, govern, and meaningfully exchange statistical data between organisations.

sdmx-core supports SDMX structural metadata by providing a version-agnostic SDMX Information Model, high-performance read and write processing, validation, transformation, reference resolution, registry integration, and efficient memory management for large-scale metadata collections.

Example Codelist: Economic Indicators

Code Name Description
GDP Gross Domestic Product The total value of goods and services produced within an economy
CPI Consumer Price Index Measures changes in the price level of consumer goods and services
UNEMP Unemployment Rate Percentage of the labour force that is unemployed
IR Interest Rate The policy or market interest rate used in economic analysis
EXR Exchange Rate The value of one currency relative to another

Structural metadata defines the concepts, classifications, and rules that give data meaning and structure.
